November: Friendship Invaded

Friendship plays an important role in the story, but Mattie's friendship with Gracie causes jealousy in Sara. Have you ever found yourself frustrated or angry because a friendship seemed to be invaded by someone else?

This is one I always work on. Just a reaffirmation that each of my friends has friends, and that is good as I can't meet all of their needs myself. Their friendships don't lessen the ones I have, either.

Yep. That's good stuff, even when you might feel like a third wheel, or overlooked, or left out. There's room for friends of friends. Thankfully!

Oh, yes! That third-friend thing is tough sometimes, but you have to remember that you have a special relationship with each person, and it's okay for them to have one with each other too.

The older one gets, the easier it is to understand the dynamics of any relationship, but issues of friendship are especially difficult for young people. As a young teenager, I became the third member of a friendship that had already existed from elementary school. Maybe I was the invader, the threat. I'm not sure. I just remember never being quite sure where I stood with either of the other girls. Ironically, one of my sons experienced a similar situation when he was in middle school. In both our cases, however, those friendships, based probably more on proximity, than common interests, dissipated as we headed off to college where more lifelong friendships were established.

Frustrated or sad, yes, but not angry - because I believe the saying: "If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it's yours. If it doesn't, it never was." That can definitely apply to friends.

This was a problem when I was in junior high. I was in a tight three person friendship and always felt tension. But now I have friends who are friends with each other and that is great.
