March: Do You "Cheat" With Illustrated Novels?
Featured author Scott Westerfeld asks, "While reading Leviathan, did you ever 'cheat' and skip ahead to the next picture?" (Or have you done this with other illustrated books?)

I try not to, because I usually end up skipping some major point in the story. But if I know that the picture is on the very next page, then I might turn the page and look at the image for a while before going back to where I left off.
I definitely don't look ahead, because they can be such spoilers. I was actually frustrated a couple of times in Leviathan when the picture was on the page before the events in the picture happened. As in, I had to turn to the next page to know what was happening in the picture on the previous page. That was a little strange.
I made sure not to look ahead. Each picture is like a special treat, so looking at them early or all at once makes them less special than seeing them one at a time. Plus, I liked being able to put them into context with what I was currently reading instead of spoiling myself. :)

Funny, I would never dream of reading ahead in a novel, but have no compunctions about looking ahead at the illustrations. Don't ask me to explain! Because I don't know why.
Yes I am a terrible cheater with illustrated books - especially if I am crazy about the illustrator. I usually pretend that I'm "only going to look at the next one... I swear" but that is a slippery slope my friends. Before I know it, I'm paging through the whole book, super-fast before I can think twice, gorging on all the pictures at once. Bad bad elf.
Oh definitely. I can't help it, it's been a habit ever since I was little and all the books I read still had pictures!
