Emiko Superstar, a great graphic novel by Mariko Tamaki and Steve Rolston, has been named one of this month's recommended reads by the postergirlz. When Emiko discovers the world of performance art, she slowly sheds her shyness and finds herself on stage, reciting diary entries - but they aren't from her own diary. Who wrote them and how did she find them? Read the book to find out!

Emiko, like the The Plain Janes, was published by Minx, an all-too-short-lived imprint of DC Comics.

ReplyDeleteI'm from Detroit. We have a thriving art community. I attended a school with a great performance art depart. And to answer your questions, yes, yes, yes. My freshman year I performed a monologue from "A Rose for Emily."
ReplyDeleteThe Spoken Word/poetry community is huge in Detroit. I not only hung out at open mics regularly in the mid-late 90s, but I regularly participated. Def Jam winner, Jessica Care Moore is Detroit homegrown.
WOW (Women Out Loud), Citywide Poets and a dozen other poetry organizations are based in Detroit. We have huge, active poetry community.
I love the stage and we at Color Online,our real-life group has hosted open mic.

Yes, I performed a painting with my friend in college. We painted with fruit on a sheet to music. Uh, yeah.
