March: Have You Ever Hidden Who You Are?

Featured author Scott Westerfeld asks, "Have you ever, like Deryn in Leviathan, had to hide what you really were to follow your dream?"

  1. We have to be very careful whenever we hide the truth, for it is difficult to forsee all the consequences. As a teenager, I once hid the truth of a situation I was in, under the idea that I was following a dream. But for me the dream was a delusion.

  2. I have definitely been in situations where I hid my true self in order to fit in. I try not to do that anymore, but it's still a struggle sometimes. I so want to be liked!

  3. I pride myself on being myself, no matter where I am or what I'm doing - unless I am acting, in which case I have to slip into character!

  4. Upon reflection, my answer has changed completely.

Yes. Right now, in fact. I'm not pretending to be something I'm not, but I'm not revealing certain aspects of me.

In part, it's just a desire for privacy. Who really wants to share Everything? In part, it's because I believe the dream requires it. The society where this dream resides demands I maintain a certain attitude if I want to be a part of that society. I don't give a hooey for the society; I just want the dream that resides there.

Certain situations and professions demand certain behaviors and images. Being multi-faceted creatures, I think we can put different faces forward based on what propriety or our wishes demand.

  5. Interesting, JenFW.

I don't think I've hidden. Just too tall. :~) No, really. It's too hard for me to hide. Here I am. Take it or leave it.
