August: Overprotected?

Nana is very overprotective of Kendra. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of an overprotective guardian?

  1. Nana is indeed over-protective of Kendra to such an extent that Kendra is suffocated no matter what she does. This is no longer a form of protection, but is almost psychological abuse. Kendra can't make any decisions for herself, so she is ill-equipped to deal with the world, and make decisions when she is really on the spot. So I think an over-protective parent really defeats the purpose of the protection. It is really about the parent's fears more than the teen's well-being.

  2. If someone feels as though they are overprotected, they might rebel, and if they go too far and do something outrageous and dangerous...

  3. I agree with these disadvantages, and I also think Nana had her reasons (namely that her own daughter got pregnant at 14 with Kendra). She's acting out of fear.

Conversation and communication between Nana and Kendra could help things, but it's just not in their nature to talk openly. So it goes on.

  4. These are some great answers building here, between you each!

Does the over-protected child know he is loved? Or is he so anxious to escape he misses it?

  5. I wonder if overprotected is better than underprotected? I guess it's a question of degree, but I'm not sure.
