July: Art or vandalism?

Many of the townsfolk think that what the Janes do is vandalism. What are your thoughts about street art? Where is the line for you? What is art? What is vandalism?

  1. Sure it may look like art but depending on where it's put, it is vandalism. Someone owns that building or wall and they'll have to clean it up. And if it is the state that owns it, then tax payers will be the ones cleaning it up. Unless the person was contracted to go and paint their art on a wall, then it is vandalism. A friend of mine told me that in Paris, there is this one wall that is for people to go and tag.

  2. Tyree Guyton's famous Hieldberg Project in Detroit was called vandalism and an eyesore. His work became an art movement recieving worldwide coverage, admiration, referenced in poetry and more.

Burn by Black Artemis aka Sophia Quintero is a very cool novel about a writer/artist. Writers' don't call their work grafiti. Loved the book and it gave me a whole new appreciation and education on the artform.

  3. I think it comes down to ownership, and motivation, personally. If it's your own property, that's one thing, but if you destroy someone else's property without permission, then that definitely crosses a line.

  4. Re graffiti: I'm tempted to say, if you like it it's art, and if you don't it vandalism, but that makes it totally subjective and doesn't respect property. I hate seeing random tagging around my neighborhood. I'm just lucky it hasn't happened to me. It made me think of that Pfizer commercial, you may have seen it. Here's the link:

  5. Freedom of expression does not give someone the right to destroy another's personal property. I love Genevieve's comment that there a wall in Paris for people to tag. Every city should have a place like that.
